Do pop stars care more about their looks than music?

I chose to express this article because I believe it says a lot about the pop genre. Recently pop has been more associated with a look rather than a music genre itself. For example the article shows images of Jedward, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Katy Perry. (Lady Gaga probably the most famous for her outrageous outfits).

In my opinion, the main thing this article does is just truly highlight hoe many other areas of every day life the pop genre influences; Style, trends, social networking, all of which the pop genre has a firm grip on. To name one example, Rihanna dying her hair an electric red, began a shockwave which produced thousands of red headed wannabes. Lady gaga put out the suggestion fashion wise that anything goes; there are no boundaries to what you can do with your clothes. But I think one of the most significant was Nicki Minaj. He racy colourful and revealing outfits, alongside her make up in abundance, have all resultantly been associated with the pop genre. It is clear to notice that the leading trendsetters within the genre are mainly female. 

The article also shows the contrast in opinions between the celebrities in pop. Artists such as Example, Tiny Tempah, Ne Yo, and Dappy all agree that image has now muscled out the music side of the genre and shoved the spotlight on image. Example even went as far to say “There are no more good songs in the charts”, suggesting this is the reason for such concentration on image. Dev and Nathan (The wanted), were very on the fence about the situation, they both suggested that it is about both great music and a great image. And finally Harry styles and Katy B do not think image is more important that the music, they think that image comes after.

To conclude, i think the article is trying to induce thought on whether image has really overtaken the essence of the pop genre. The music itself.

Prelim Evaluation.

To begin with, the prospect of this task was very daunting to me, I had had no real use with cameras or even photoshop for that matter, so when I was told I would have to use both these things as the primary instruments for this task it can be understood that I was slightly nervy.

At the start of the project, I designed a flat plan of the cover and contents I originally wanted for my magazine, I thought I had set ideas for the magazine, I knew I would have my niece on the front, dressed in uniform; this was to represent the change in stages of education, hence the reason why the magazine was called transition.  

The idea for the contents page was not set in stone, originally the idea was to have a stack of GCSE books alongside some children’s books, again to represent the difference in educational stages. I then realised that this idea did not fit cohesively with the front cover. In the end I decided to go with colour to increase cohesiveness, as opposed to image relativity. It just so turned out that I preferred the contents I ended up with, rather than the one I had originally planned.

I never had any problems with producing ideas, but they were not always as good on the screen as they were on paper, or in my head for that matter. Alongside this, even ideas that I thought looked good on the screen, upon advice from teachers, I realised that they did not reflect the properties of a magazine. For example, they made the magazine more confusing, or too busy. I learnt that for magazines, in the majority of cases, simpler is definitely better.

During the production of this project, the main thing I found hard was using photoshop itself. I found it to be very confusing, after three or four sessions using it, I found using it much much easier. I grasped the concept of when and where it was appropriate to use certain tools, in ways that would positively impact my magazine and the way it was received.

To conclude, I am more than happy with the way my magazine cover and contents page has turned out. I am happy because something I could not see myself doing, I managed to do to a quality that I am very proud of in a matter of weeks. This has now given me the confidence to go into the rest of my media course, knowing I will not drown.

John And Maggie Durham.

Magazine Title - Transition.

Target Audience - Parents of children aged 10-12.

Magazine Purpose - To Inform Parents on the best way for them to help their children make the transition from Primary to Secondary School. 

Reader Profiles of John and Maggie Durham.-

John and Maggie Durham live in Winchester in the UK; they have an 11 year old daughter called Emily Elizabeth. Emily Elizabeth is a very active and bright Girl, she has the potential to achieve extraordinarily in her life and her parents are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that happens. However they do not want to over push her, and are unsure of how to introduce her to life as a secondary school student, where it really matters.  They are worried that her shyness and sometimes lack of confidence will prevent her from achieving everything they know she is capable of. They are looking for a guide to show them the best way in which to introduce their child into the world of “big school” with confidence. 

 John Durham,46 - An investment banker that was born in Westminster, he was raised by Politician Father and a Stay at home mother, they were, Nigel and Susan Durham. John is a Kind loving man with a huge heart. His entire life revolves around his wife Maggie, His daughter Emily Elizabeth, and their three year old son Thomas. John is a HUGE Queens Park rangers fan; he loves to golf, and has a passion for cars from the 1950’s.  

Maggie Durham ,42 -is a Part time secretary at a high flying law firm. She was Born in Oxford, but moved to London to Marry John.  She was raised by a Car Salesman Father and a Nurse mother, William and Cheryl Carter. Her life Just like Her husband revolves around her two children, who are the primary reason she works part time, her passions are antique Jewellery and art.  

Emily Elizabeth,11 - Is Bright and enthusiastic, Loves maths, Justin   Bieber, and One Direction. Her favorite colour is baby Pink and she wants to be a Vet when she grows up.
